Do you need a High Amp Alternator?
If you have added any accessories to your car or truck. Such as stereo, lights, winches, dvd players or other electrical
accessories. You probably need an alternator that will supply you with the current you need for reliable operation. If you are
having problems with the reliability of cheap rebuilt alternators from parts houses? A high output alternator may be the solution for
you! If you are building a hot rod or race car and only want the best and most reliable charging system available. Make the
investment in a high output alternator, it will be money well spent.
What makes an alternator high output?
The windings (wire) is larger or double wound to produce higher amps. But, to make the alternator perform and last more has to
be done. BEWARE OF LOW PRICED HIGH AMP ALTERNATORS. In order to make a true high amp alternator you must beef up all
the components. Remember, a chain is only as strong as its weakest link! Alternators built by us are built to take the abuse of high
powered stereos, emergency lights, amplifiers, converters, winches, snow plows and whatever is going to be pulling amps from
your battery. Our alternators are equipped with heavy duty rectifiers, regulators, bearings , rotors and hand wound windings to
produce amps and last!
Why do some high amp alternators not charge at idle?
Usually this is caused by trying to get a small alternator to put out more amps than it's capable of doing efficiently, or from
mismatched parts. If someone builds a 105 amp GM Alternator to put out 180 or 200 amps THEY WILL NOT PUT OUT AT IDLE!
Don't be fooled by high amp rated alternators that are too cheap to be true. The only way to accomplish a 200 amp alternator that
will perform at idle is to go with a large case alternator such as the CS-144, AD-244 or large case Ford alternator. These
alternators will give you the performance you need at idle. A smaller diameter pulley will also help to keep alternator rotor speed
up at low rpm. We install high amp alternators in our drive in shop and experience first hand how well alternators will perform on a
vehicle and build our alternators to perform on your vehicle. In most cases the alternators we build are made to produce 30 to 50
percent more than what they are rated from the factory & Conversions that can double your alternator output. If you need more
current we can assist you with a dual alternator install. If you have a trailered vehicle for stereo competition only we have higher
output alternators that put out zero amps at idle and up to 350 amps at 2500 rpms- only can run for short times and not for the
everyday driver! Beware of outlandish claims of 300, 400 even 500 amp alternators for passenger cars and trucks. Remember, if it
sounds too good to be true.....it probably is.
What does the Voltage Regulator do?
The voltage regulators function is to adjust the field voltage to the alternator to control output. As more load is applied to the
battery the regulator adjust the current to the field to make the alternator put out more amps. Most voltage regulators have a set
point of 14.2 volts and may be between 13.5 to 14.7 volts while running. Depending on temperature and regulator set point. In a
high output alternator the temperatures are extreme because of the higher amps- Power creates HEAT! The regulator can fail to
function if it's not designed for extreme use. We also can convert almost any alternator to an external regulator. This design has
been used for years by most companies building high amp extreme output alternators for ambulance, limos, fire truck and police
applications. Nations brings you this technology at an affordable price. This takes the regulator out of the heat and helps it to
maintain maximum performance and reliability under extreme demands. You can also adjust the voltage from 14 to 20 volts with
the potentiometer.
